A nice response to my personal piece on how we can end up limiting ourselves through our own fears.
A friend, Clair Lewis, who also happens to be a political activist on issues affecting disabled people, as well as sexual rights, tells me it reminds her of a quote she much likes. It comes from the writings of Utah Phillips, a Labour organiser, direct activist and anarchist, and goes:
“The state can’t give you freedom, and the state can’t take it away. You’re born with it, like your eyes, like your ears. Freedom is something you assume, then you wait for someone to try to take it away. The degree to which you resist is the degree to which you are free…”
I think that has a lot of resonance still, today – and not just for the trans community!
