Legal abuse of trans women

Latest release…following conversation with the PA. I’ve also slotted the PA’s updated release at the end.

The British legal system is happy to subject trans women to treatment that breaches their human rights – irrespective of whether they are guilty of a crime or not. The British Press, far from exposing such abuse, is more than happy to cheer it on from the sidelines.

That, according to writer and sexual rights activist Jane Fae, is the upshot of reports in the Press Association today that appear to gloat over the unshaven condition of Nina Kanagasingham, as she appeared before the Old Bailey.

Jane said: “anyone undergoing gender transition will be acutely sensitive to their personal appearance. Facial hair is a key part of that – yet the legal establishment regularly refuse trans women access to adequate shaving facilities on the grounds that they might self-harm.

“Given the cruelty implicit in this refusal – and the fact that the legal establishment has now been warned on more than one occasion of how cruel this practice is – the only conlusion is that our legal service either does not want to understand trans issues – or is more than happy to harm trans women.”

Jane added: “As always, the humiliation of the individual concerned is compounded by press reports. The PA not only led on the fact that Nina had stubble: they repeated the point in the second paragraph.

“A spokesman for the PA has told me that this is OK because it is merely a description of the defendant’s appearance. On the day that the press regularly comments on senior female politicians, including descriptions of how hairy they are, I shall believe that.”
