Below is the latest statment from BTP on Monday’s Kings Cross Tube incident. I have rised with them the use of the term “legal name”, sugesting it is not wholly accurate and the story can as well be told refering to Sonia as “also known as”.
Otherwise, this seems to be a full and sensitive account and BTP have acted in a sensitive and straightforward manner throughout
Nina Kanagasingham, who is alleged to have murdered Sonia, was brought before magistrates for charging this morning.

British Transport Police can confirm that the person who died at King’s Cross underground station on Monday 25 October was Sonia, also known in her legal name of David Burgess, 63, of Shaftesbury Ave, London.
A 34-year-old woman, Nina Kanagasingham, of Chichele Rd, Cricklewood has been charged with murder.
Sonia, a solicitor, had two identities, David and Sonia that were both well known to her family, friends and work colleagues.
She leaves behind two daughters and a son, all adults.
Her family members have released the below statement:
“Sonia (David) was a loving and wonderful person and will be missed deeply. We would appreciate being given space to come to terms with our loss.”
The law firm where she worked as David Burgess, Luqmani Thompson and Partners in Wood Green, said:
“We are immensely saddened by the death of David Burgess, an enormously talented practitioner, an inspiration to a generation of lawyers practising in this field, and a great friend.
“David’s contribution to legal development is unquestionable but what is sometimes forgotten is that he was a pioneer in setting legal tests and trends in genuinely trailblazing cases.
“This firm has tried hard to live up to the high standards set by David, we would not have been the same firm without his contribution and encouragement; we shall not be the same firm without him.”
Investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Ashley Croft, said:
“We would like to express our condolences to Sonia’s (David’s) family following this tragedy.
“Family liaison officers are working closely with Sonia’s family, providing them support and assistance during this difficult time.”
Notes to editors:
While Sonia’s legal name was David Burgess, her family wish for her to be referred to as Sonia. She was known in her profession as David.
Sonia’s family members, including her daughters, son and former wife do not wish to make any further statements to media. They have supplied two photos of Sonia, attached.
David’s colleagues at Luqmani Thompson and Partners have also requested privacy to grieve at this time and will not be making any further statements or providing photographs.
As guidance, the accurate term for describing Sonia is cross gender or gender variant.
